In the lake Pseudotropheus johannii "eastern" (formerly known as Melanochromis johannii "eastern") is living along the rocky coasts between Makanjila Point and Chuanga. The males of this species are black with remarkable lightblue stripes in the length of the body and almost totally black fins. On the other hand the females are - when they are young - almost totally orange, including the fins, however when they become older they also get some dark tinted stripes in the length of the body. Because this is a species which defends its territory fiercely in the rocky environment where he used to live - specially in mating-season - you need to hold it in an aqaurium with a lot of hiding places. They can be repulsive against other fish of their own kind, they leave other fish alone. Since the beginning of 2012 I have one male and three females in my aquarium where they found their one place in the mean time. When fully grown, this species is not very large. The male in my aquarium is about 10 cm, the females are a little smaller. They are easy to keep and they will have offspring very fast, if they are kept under the right conditions. I've had lots of youngs from them and again there are some swimming around between the rocks at the moment, from about 1,5 cm to 5 cm. This species lives in an environment which is rich of algae, so you have to feed it things like spirulina or peas. |
